We Got The Power
This is only day 18. Not even half-way through the 40 day Fast. My commitment needs some power. I should have thrown away those sweets in the freezer, the potato chips and cookies from a meeting I attended, and the dish of candy on my dining table. I actually see myself stuffing first the cookies, then potato chips, candy, finally eating the frozen treats from the freezer!!
But, something stops me. I take a moment and think: Just hold on a little longer. You can do this. I believe it is the power that comes from prayer. If I just breathe and pray, I stop myself from shoveling all the rich food into my mouth and I get a piece of fruit instead. I got the power—the power of prayer.
You may have some hard things to get through. You may be at the point of giving up or giving in right now. It may be something big and public you are facing or you may have to say “No” to something small and private that only you will know if you made the best choice. You can just take a moment. Breathe and say a prayer.
I’m not talking about vegetables and water today. (Though I do hope you are staying with the Fast) I’m talking about how we get through hard choices without losing heart. I began this post by talking about how I am trying not to break my Fast today; it’s only Saturday. I can take a break tomorrow if I want to. But, I began to feel that what I am really talking about is how to do hard things. How to stick with the decision and not give up. I turn to prayer and Scripture verses. My prayer may simply be: Jesus! You have your favorite Scripture, here are some of mine. Just keep going. If you stop — be prayerful about it. Don’t stop because you feel you can’t, because you can. You got the power. God is able. Breathe and Say a Prayer.
Think on These Things
Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. 1 Chronicles 16:11Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. Psalm 4:1
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Philippians 4:13God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
Prayer for Day 18: O God of Love and God of Power, remind us that it is your power at work in us that allows us to do hard things. Thank you. Amen.
